as most of you know i have gotten out of african cichlids (which is like a sin on this forum ;D) for the time being and am having a go with discus. i have also started a new marine tank. this come about due to the loss of a much loved pair of maroon clowns that i got from our fearless leader, dean , and amanda a few years back. the idea of this tank journal is to continually update this while the tank is being set up and so you can see the growth in the corals over time. my initial plan for this tank is to do an ocellaris clown (nemo) reef tank. Current Full Tank Shot 12/712 5/5/12 24/4/12 5/4/12 SpecsTank12x12x14 (LxWxH) LightingDIY 14 led dimmable kit from Aquastyle Online used 18 3watt leds 6 royal blue 4 10000K white 2 6500K white 1 Ultra Violet 1 True Violet FiltrationAquaclear 50 hang on containing: carbon filter wool and sponge soon to add Chemi-pure elite (phosphate Absorber) HeaterEheim Jager TruTemp 100 Watt Fully Submersible Heater PowerheadKoralia nano 900 Protein SkimmerNONE- not worth it for such a small tank Rock and Sand4 kg of dead coral sand 5.5 kg of cured live rock LivestockFishStarcki damselocellaris clownfish x2 Cleanup crew2 White leg hermits 1 common hermit 2 cerith snails 1 Nassarius snail InvertsN/a CoralSoftiesassorted corallimorphs green/blue ricordea Rainbow rhodactis Zoas and Palyswild reds eagle eyes green bay packers green button polyp LPS2 plate fungi 3 toxic green hammer/anchor SPSN/a Maintenance Routine8 litre water changes once week top off with RO 1-2x a day depending on evap.

this is the tank, painted with matt black acrylic using a foam roller, applied in both directions with 4 coats. some hardware for the tank, pretty self explanatory. Hagen Test kit Ammonia (NH3/4); Nitrite (NO2); Nitrate (NO3); pH (low range & high range kits); Carbonate Hardness (KH); General Hardness (GH); Iron (Fe); Calcium (Ca); Phosphate (PO4) Sand in.. Just add rock and water.

thought i would be something different for the regular uses of the forum to read... never know may convert a few. i was so devastated when your clowns passed that i needed to do something to fill the saltwater void that was left in my small fish collection.

Looking good firthy. I am very interested in this thread as I am interested in setting up a marine one day. Can you breed marine as easy as cichlids?

No moy, marine fish are almost impossible to breed in captivity besides from a small handful of fish. Clowns are easy, keeping the fry alive is another thing. You must provided them live rotifers (plankton). Marine aquarium is also very expansive to set up and maintain compared to freshwater. For what it's going to cost me to set up, maintain and fill with live stock and corals this tank will cost me more then completely setting up a 6x2x2 freshwater set up.

thanks mate, his head is normally bright yellow as well. i think the camera angle and flash has distorted it slightly. will try get a side on photo of him. i had never seen one before the day i bought him. they need to be kept alone or with fish with very different colouration. apparently they will kill any yellow or blue fish in the tank regardless of size.

removed unrelated posts. please start a new thread if you want to converse about the ethics of releasing fish back in to the wild.

just an update, removed the starcki damsel. it was a 3 cm fish with the personality of a 12inch red devil. so traded him in on another clown.

well as promised here is a tank update. have installed another wavemaker so now im current turning about 3500-3800 L/h. also got one or two more types of zoanthids. but other from that its just coral growth and reproduction. the colours my look a little bright as i had to adjust the photo for the very bright high temperature led lighting (20000K+). and the white substrate reflects way to much light. might change it to black eventually.

i have been meaning to do it for a while, i just havent had time to get the camera and tripod out. ill try get another one. i an having pretty good grown with alot of things. just dealing with a little issue at the moment of some of my corals flesh is starting to receed. particually the toxic green hammer in the top left corner and the fluro yellow trachy in the middle on the far right next to the orange mushroom.

did you add any corals between the last 2 shots? (in first post)or did they just multiply on their own?
