In my Discus tank I have a fine white quartz substrate. I like to run a semi bio type tank, mostly just driftwood pieces and just a couple of amazon swords. I would like those swords to really flourish into some big beasts. I don't want to go to the expense of laying down an expensive substrate for just a few plants, but I was thinking of building up the complete ADA substrate system in a chinese takeaway container, planting a sword and burying it into my gravel. So the question to you plant buffs online here is would this work? Would there be enough room in the container for the root system? Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

or just use root tabs under them in the substrate.

I have before, but I was thinking of trying something new for me. And I like the thought of a fertilized substrate that doesn't need to re fertilized every 3 months Plus I question the effectiveness of having really concentrated fertilizer in one spot that leaches from there as opposed to a medium that is nutrient rich in all directions.

I have used pots before like you describe and it worked fine. ADA still leaches especially when first wet, it can create problems on initial set up.

Having discus is an advantage with the leaching. I was planning to let it go through the break-in peroid in a bucket with water that is replaced daily as i do my daily waterchange.
