Recently, I dirted a 3ft tank with potting mix and capped it with 5mm gravel. The water has been clear from day one but slowly, tannins have been released in to the water to make it a yellow colour which I don't like. I assume the tannins are being released from the few woodchips that the potting mix contained. How long will this last? Can it be treated without having to remove all the wood? Will water changes fix this? Is there a lazy, easier way to clear it up without affecting the plants? Thank you.

Where can I source this kind of stuff around here? I just had a bit of a look on google and I suppose it costs a fair bit. Will it be suitable in an aquarium by itself or does it have to be covered? Thank you.

There are a few quality online sites that you can pick it up fairly cheap from. Shop around. It doesn't leech into the water or effect water Param's in any way and the plants love it.
I capped mine with some Tahitian Moon Sand and Pool Filter Sand or you can leave it uncapped as it looks like dark Gravel to start with.
You could always get your local LFS to order it in for you but they will mark it up.
