lately a few of you know i have sold most of my colonies and decided to only keep 1 (soon to be 2) species. this is what the tank looked like a few weeks ago and this is after the make over. i wanted to make it look as natural as possible so i have used universal canyon 4x2 background with a large decorcok on the right hand side. coral sand for substrate. 2-3 decent size bits of anubias. im planning on keeping Protomelas Steveni 'taiwan reef' and also Aulonocara Maulana 'sp 500 bicolour' let me know what you think.

got them off a friend in sydney.he got them from a fish store at kellyville.
they are universal backgrounds. i have this 4 foot background 4 stand alone rocks as well as a 6 foot background.
they dont make them in australia anymore, universal moved the business to america so its really expensive to buy them here now so lfs dont stock them. thats why i stockpiled a heaps of it.

Kellyville/pet shop boys are the new Aussie distributor, they're importing direct from America now, lots more range, pricing isn actually that much worse so I don't know what the other lfs are on about, w just don't stock them cause the pricks won't send us any, we've ordered and ordered numerous times and still yet to recurve we will keep persisting though very well worth it

andrew will be able to tell you what they are worth.
im not sure, i swapped 20kg of texas holey rock for all my background stuff.
from memory the 4 ft are about 280-300 and the 6ft is 400 could be way off but those numbers ring a bell.

i had bunning play sand in the tank before but i found vacuuming the tank became a nightmare and was getting little bubbles of hydrogen sulfide so i thought i better remove it. cleaning is a breeze now.

hey Michael,,
that looks unreal mate, you always do a nice display tank, but i think that would be better with some sort of substrate, but any way you go, looks great dude,,
cheers neil

thanks guys,
keeping away from bn, they create way to much mess for the discus and they have a habit of liking the taste of the discus' slime coat. which damages the fish.
yeh substrate would be nice. it was look heaps better. but having substrate makes the daily 30% water change and vacuum alot harder then it already is. bare bottom the only way to go with these in my opinion.
these fish are the most needy, fragile, time consuming and expansive fish i have kept, but also one of the most rewarding.
have plans on getting a breeding pair in the future. from what i have been told if you can raise discus fry, you can do anything.

Mate you submit your tank designs to some tank display comps they always look cool. When I finish my tank i'll show you what it looks like with your background.

looks great dude, the great thing about bare bottom tanks is that the light bounces off the bottom which makes the fish look even more amazing

The lights I'm using now are crappy t8 fluros, they are terrible. They throw a gross yellow colour so I'm the coming months I'm upgrading to led units with moonlights and am going to set them up to simulate dawn, midday, dusk and night. But yes the reflection off the bottom does make the fish look a lot nicer.

How did you go with your medication too? heard the flukes got them. Flukes is the most annoying thing keeping discus i'm currently nuking all my tanks because i think one tank had it and when i moved fish around i infected all my tanks

well i medicated 2 days ago. 2 fish were really looking under the weather but one had really come back to life. regained all his colour and eating again. the other one still is very dark and had cloudy eyes. thinking about culling the poor bugger. what are you feeding your discus?

i feed flake, discus grudles, beef heart, seafood mix,Brine shrimp and blood worms just mix it up everyday so they get a good variety, let me know if you need a hand with anything.
