afternoon all,
setup my tank a few months back. found out the hard way cichlids like all plants. Is there plants someone could recommend for my tank? i think most of my fish are omnivore or herbivore.. do i have a chance ? I don’t really want to go with fake plants. Tanks bottom is small pebble base

Yeh those two seem to be the only plant fish don't like the taste of. But some cichlids, lice p.acei will still eat them so it's a bit hit and miss.

I had Anubius in mine but started to show some wear so I took it out. Now I stick to the fake plant kind just to add even more colour.

What fish do you keep? I think scarecrow had blue stricta with Africans. Blue stricta is a Bog plant and not a true aquatic, it will last for a time under water but is a terrestrial plant! It will never grow as an aquatic but LFS still sell it as such... Maybe LFS should take into account the amont of information out there now and change their buying profiles. There are 100's of actual aquatics out there that will grow under low light/simple/low maintenence setups but they are not so easy to grow and turn over in good time with good turnover so they will sell big plants that dont like being submerged for long periods of time as aquatic plants. The aquarium shops know this but still sell them as aquatics! it bloody annoys me! I dont think i have too much more to say on that one except be aware and do your homework on plant species you have decided would look nice in your tanks.... There are 1000's of real aquatics and there will be one for your tank just ask. I have kept illegal to normal/general plant species in my tanks and can tell you there is one for every occasion. Most of the illegal species are not justifies and anyone, technically... keeping mosses is breaking the law. Mosses are so wide spread it would be a joke to get raided. Take from that what you will but i wont stop keeping mosses and several other species in my STERILE, CONTROLLED environment that has no chance of ever seeing a local creek... I wont say the same for other aqauarists as i dont know them. Bring on the DPI as i have reciepts! I am not justifying the plants i have had over the years but in a controlled environ they are no threat to our native waterways. If you decide to go that way with some of the GREY area species please know that a raid would destroy all tanks in possesion to rid ALL particles of the grey species! There are plenty of native species that need to be propogated before Grey area species. We as australians have some of the most diverse aquatic environs in the planet, only behind the amazon in species count, and to tell you the truth some of the most challenging. Erios suck as do some of the other top end (NT) species i have cloned for plant growers/collectors over the years. They got rich @ $100 a plant and i did the cloning work. Wouldnt have done it if i hated doing it

It may be a bog plant but in my experience it does really well submersed. But I do agree lots of the plants in Lfs are not very suitable, I got caught out by that when I first entered the hobby and swore off plants for a few years
