anyone have a name, link or any information on the cooling ponds down south that hold cichlids? Heading down to tassy in february and will be fishing all the way down and up with a couple of days in the tasmanian highlands. I would like to fish the ponds as i have seen some great piccies of large americans being caught but cant remember their name or find a location etc.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, there are americans and Africans in the freshwater cooling Dam at hazelwood power station. When I was working there they restricted all access to the waters edge near the hot water outlet as management considered it a security risk with the increase in green peace protests. I'm sure there are ways to get past the fences and get close enough to the outlets n warm water to the areas where the fish are but I would be careful with trespassing on power station property. I know the ones up here don't go lightly on trespassing, the cops consider power generation a priority and are very quick the react to security breaches. By all means go for it! I prob would give it a go. Just thought I would give you's a heads up.

oh i know. i have seen some of the african species pulled out there and the colours are amazing. apparently kids go down there trap a heap of fish and sell them to the local fish stores for pocket money.

It would be interesting to see the evolution of the Africans as they turn into a new species. The colour of the devils look good from the pictures I have been able to dig up.

Looks like there is a camping ground and water sports on other adjacent parts - see link www.visitlatrobevalley.com/pages/hazelwood-pondage/So I assume it is only directly near the power station part that is a no go and I assume most fish stay near the optimum temp water 'out of bounds'. Sounds very interesting...

Hey Kane, here is the old thread referring to Hazelwood etc.
Maybe an Admin can link these and your thread together (I don't know how?)
Cheers Craig
