Scientific Name: Xenotilapia ochrogenys 'Ndole Bay' Common Name: N/A Size: 9-11cm Location: Ndole Bay, Lake Tanganyika Care: Xenotilapia ochrogenys is the same as most other Xenotilapia. Ochrogenys are a peaceful cichlid and can be easily harassed by more robust species such as neolamprologus. For this reason it is best to keep ochrogenys in larger species colonies. Cyprichromis are good tank mates as they inhabit the upper levels of a tank, whereas ochrogenys stay on the bottom. Xenotilapia accepts most foods as long as it reaches the bottom where they dwell. A combination of pellets and frozen foods such as brine is recommended. They will spend most of their day sifting through the sand for food. The ochrogenys colouration is a silver slended torpedo-like body similar to flavipinnis but with a robust bull-nose formed head. Males show a mixture of fluorescent blues and yellows scattered throughout their bodies with large black spots and black highlights to tail and anal fins. Females display mainly silver bodies, but do sometimes show faint colours as described above. Being a sandsifter, ochrogenys prefer sand substrate where they sift sand through their gills to get their food. They also dig sand pits for breeding. Breeding: Ochrogenys is a maternal mouth brooder like most African cichlid species. However, ochrogenys is a bi-parental mouth brooder. Both the male and female with hold the eggs/fry at some stage during the 27 day incubation. Photographs:Male displaying to female
