Hi everyone, just wondering about Red Forest Jewels (RFJs). I have a pair who lay regularly though no success as yet. They look like RFJs in pictures on the interweb etc. When I spoke about them to the guys at the aquarium I mostly buy from they asked if they had murdered the other occupants yet, and told me stories of mayhem and horror (2 of the guys did with one removing a very nasty fellow from his tank and placing it in another tank with more aggressive guys whom he seems to fit in well with), the third said his were aggressive when breeding but not homicidal. My two are very placid even when laying, they hunt other guys out sure, but do not do so with the rage of an axe murderer. Got to speaking to them and a guy in an aquarium in Sydney and was told that RFJs have been heavily interbred with other species over the years. He did give me examples of other species in the mix, but I can't recall what they were. I must admit, the RFJs in the Sydney aquarium were considerably larger and chunkier than my guys who are both mature fish, and where mine are a strong bright red, his were a very deep blood red. Question is just how interbred with other species are RFJs in Australia? Would this explain the differences in temperament ranging from fairly easy going to homicidal maniacs? Just wondering is all

Colours will depend on food quality ... Poor food will be dull red or pinkish red .. To a strong red with blue dots all over it.... As for breeding with others there possibilities as there is a lot of cross breeding goin on an sold to the public.... With other types of fish... As for the breeding mine were reasonably good to each other but chased others away .... Do they spawn on an open rock or in a cave an when they hatch need to wait a few days to see them but other tank mates will eat them out of the gravel when just spawned or place a sponge over filter inlet..... Mine survived better with a cave ..... Fry is good food for other tank mates there not that protective of them

Hi Fisshy. They usually spawn on open rock. They have tried inside a terracotta pot once. Frankly, I think my catfish are the culprits.

Mine loved a terracotta type dish that had high sides when Turned upside down resembled a cave with a large opening sort of thing
