Feeding the fish tonight and found my female white calvus in a barnicle fanning eggs with the male standing gaurd out front! How many days before they become free swimming and leave the barnicle? As I want to put them in a fry saver so they dont get eaten.

I would prefer to leave them in for the parents to raise but I have my colony on Kande Island lethrinops in with them. So they will become fast food once they leave the barincles.

Bad news turns into good news! As I lose my first batch of calvus I noticed today my first mouth full of Kande Island lethrinops. Fingers crossed she holds the distance!

Unfortunatley after 3 weeks of raising them I checked the fry saver to find them dead today. I found some type of little caterpillar looking wormy thing in the fry saver so I am not sure if it killed them or something I was doing wrong. I will post a photo soon of it to see if any body can identify it.

Mitch
Yes that seems to be the results I have only had one big batch that I raised to adults out of many batches. At the fry stage they need continual but gentle water movement and I place an air stone in the fry saver to stir up the rubbish on the bottom. The air stone was suggested by Rowie apparently he seems to raise a few.
Hope that helps next time. It may take a while and a few modifications, or just put them in their own tank.
Cheers
Ron

Thanks for the kind words and advice. Hopefully some trial and error will find the perfect raising technique.

Third time lucky hopefully, just removed lethrinops from the tank so their in the tank with just Bn now. Hopefully they can raise the fry successfully by themselves. Theirs about 12 little suckers in the barnacle just about to leave with my other female fanning eggs in another barnacle, so fingers crossed!

24 little fry swimming around the tank :-) The parents are not as protective as I thought they would be.. Once they left the barnacle its fend for your selves. Is this common for Calvus?

Mitch from my experiences that is normal for the parents not to look after the fry once they have left the shell/barnacle. The only other thing to watch out for is if you have other whites or even the parents start picking the fry off as they do with other fry.
Good luck the next few weeks will tell.

Yep, all eaten by the other whites except one I saved. I will master these little suckers one day. At least I have them breeding.
