Hi, there seems to be a shortage of aquatic gardeners in Newcastle! Dont be shy, if you have any experience, it is worth building this plant section up with posts for all here to reference. How many plants of what sort for my size tank? I am a newby and starting up a planted tank for the first time and had to ask this question. Thought I'd share the answers I found that gave me a guide to this process. The following sites (mostly American I think) have lots of plant packages available, so search the site to find a suitable one, eg 50 Gal "Hard to Kill" Plant Package, or 20 Gal Low Light Plant Package. http://www.freshwateraquariumplants....egory_Code=PAP www.rfiaquariumplants.com/aqu...-packages.htmlwww.aquatic-store.com/en-us/dept_191.htmlwww.thatpetplace.com/pet/cat/...4/category.webwww.azgardens.com/c-16-aquari...-habitats.aspxMost of the local fish shops are able to order over 700 types of aquatic plants through Pisces Enterprises piscesenterprises.com/joomla/ plus there are plenty of online plant suppliers. It seems like a fine art to aquatic gardening. Google everything, each plant has its own requirements from light intensity to substrate, fertilising schedule, CO2 etc. Some plants are easy as pie, others best left to the experts, but the above links should offer heaps to the uninitiated. Good luck.

6 months after starting this thread, I have learnt a bit. The reason I posted it was to find a start somewhere for myself as my tank was being done in the Walstad/NPT style. It therefore needed to be planted out heavily from the outset to absorb the initial ammonia spike common with using a fertile substrate. So I had to get a (noob) idea about how many plants to buy.
If planting a tank out with no need to buy everything at once & get it all in, there's no great rush. The general rule when planting stems is to plant leaf tip to leaf tip, so that all the leaves get equal access to light. If they are planted in bunches, the leaves that don't get light will drop off and you may likely get the stems rotting from being in contact with each other. Obviously this will be different when planting rooted plants like Val, crypts & groundcovers. Hope that's a useful bit of advice?!?
